Staying near Olmeto: a guesthouse ten minutes from the village
Photo: Agence Guddelmoni
Olmeto sits high on the hills above the Gulf of Valinco, about ten minutes' drive from Casa Mare e Macchia. You go up to the village in the morning, down to its beaches in the afternoon, and in the evening you dine in Propriano, at the harbour or at the chef's table in the house.
The drive
About ten minutes from the house
The house is on the Route de la Corniche, at the entrance to Propriano, above the gulf. Olmeto is about ten minutes away by car. In July and August, allow longer.
The commune of Olmeto runs down to the sea. The tourist office lists three beaches as belonging to it: Baracci, Abbartello and la Crique. The Bains de Baracci, the gulf's thermal baths, are also within its boundaries. Village, beaches and baths therefore all lie within the same small radius around the house.
Things to do in and around Olmeto
The village and its lanes
According to Visit Corsica, Olmeto has one of the finest views in the area, between the sea and the mountains. A heritage trail follows the lanes of the old town to the Romanesque church of Santa Maria. At the eastern edge of the village, the Romanesque chapel of Saint-Esprit hosts a pilgrimage on Whit Monday. On the commune's coastline, the Genoese towers of La Calanca and Micalona recall the gulf's defensive past. The village is described in more detail in our article on the Gulf of Valinco.
Abbartello and la Crique, on the road to Porto-Pollo
Abbartello beach mixes fine sand and rocks, with a small cove at each end. The tourist office notes free parking and a restaurant there. On the same road, the small beach of la Crique lies below the restaurant that bears its name. At the end of this road, Porto-Pollo is about 25 minutes from the house.
Baracci, the beach and the baths
Baracci beach, the nearest to the house, is a broad ribbon of sand facing west: you go there for the sunset. The Bains de Baracci, with their naturally hot sulphurous waters, are five minutes' drive away. For the baths' opening hours and season, see our page on the Bains de Baracci.
The vineyards
Olmeto lies within the area of the Sartène appellation, along with Sartène, Fozzano, Giuncheto, Grossa and Belvédère-Campomoro.
Planning your day from the house
A day around Olmeto involves very little driving. Breakfast for the suites is served from 8am to 10.30am, in the garden facing the mountains or in the large open kitchen. Then you go up to the village while it is still cool, for the heritage trail.
In the afternoon, you head back down to Abbartello or Baracci. Villa guests can ask for a picnic basket for the day.
In the evening, two options. Propriano harbour is three minutes away: you go down for dinner or a drink. Or you stay at the house, where L'Atelier des Sens lays its long table at 8pm, by reservation, on the evenings it is open. The table is open to everyone, whether you are staying at the house or not.
Suite or villa?
As a couple, take a suite. Luna is level with the infinity pool, with its private sun loungers. Nina takes up the top floor, with its large private terrace: the sea on one side, the mountains on the other. Both measure 30 m², with a queen bed and a walk-in shower.
For four, rent the whole villa: the two suites, the living room, the fitted kitchen, the large terrace, the garden and the pool, just for you.
Fantastic location with views over the pool and the sea. Andrée gave us good advice about the area.Petra · Booking
