Around Propriano, you have plenty of choice: town beaches a few minutes away, a long beach protected by the Conservatoire du littoral (the French coastal conservation body), a bay with lifeguards in summer and wheelchair access, and further south, coves with no road. For each beach: how to get there, lifeguard cover, and what to know before you lay down your towel. Driving times are measured from the house, at the entrance to Propriano. In July and August, allow longer.

Propriano's beaches, a few minutes away

Within the town's boundaries, the Sartenais Valinco Taravo tourist office lists Mancinu, Puraja, Arena Bianca and its coves, and the Lido. They are all a few minutes' drive from the house.

Mancinu, the Corniche beach

Mancinu is on the Route de la Corniche, the house's own road. Visit Corsica describes it as a beach that children and their families love, with a few rocks to dive and jump from, and a beach establishment where you can settle in.

Puraja, for sunsets

Puraja stretches for almost a kilometre, a few steps from the town centre. Visit Corsica singles it out for its sunsets, among the finest viewpoints on the gulf. If you're dining in town, this is the beach to end the day on.

Arena Bianca and its coves

Arena Bianca is five minutes from the centre, towards Capu Lauroso. A little further on, rocky coves take over from the sand.

The Lido, with lifeguards in summer

The Lido has a lifeguard station: sea rescue lifeguards watch over it in July and August. You'll also find a restaurant, a children's club and a car park.

Baracci, the nearest to the house

Leaving Propriano towards Ajaccio on the RT40, you come to Baracci, in the commune of Olmeto. It's the nearest beach to the house. Visit Corsica describes a broad ribbon of sand that keeps a wild character despite the town close by. Parking is free.

The beach faces west, and it's the one we point you to for sunsets over the gulf. Visit Corsica urges the greatest caution: when the sea is rough, swimming can become dangerous. We have found no official information about lifeguard cover at Baracci.

Portigliolo: more than three kilometres of protected sand

Some ten minutes south of Propriano, Portigliolo unrolls more than three kilometres of sand. The Conservatoire du littoral speaks of a strip more than 3 km long, the tourist office of almost 4 km.

The Conservatoire du littoral protects part of the site. The beach belongs to the Natura 2000 network and to a natural area of ecological interest, that of the Rizzanese wetland and beach. It is home to the crisped bugloss, a small beach flower that has become extremely rare and is critically endangered. Avoid walking on the dune.

To the south, the mouth of the Rizzanese gives the beach a wilder face. Near the water sports club, the tourist office describes clear water, a gentle slope and shallow depths. There is also a restaurant. Two things to bear in mind: in bad weather, the sea can quickly turn dangerous because of the waves, and the tourist office states that the beach is not accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Campomoro: the sheltered bay, accessible to all

About 25 minutes from the house, Campomoro beach lies at the heart of the village, in a sheltered bay, with a view of the Genoese tower. Fine sand, turquoise water, a gentle slope: Visit Corsica recommends it for family swimming. There are lifeguards in July and August.

It is also one of the beaches on the gulf equipped for people with reduced mobility, with an access mat, a bathing wheelchair and accessible washrooms. It holds the “Una Piaghja per Tutti” label, a beach for everyone. On site: a restaurant, toilets and a pay car park.

From the beach, you can walk up to the tower or set off along the coastal path. We devote a whole article to Campomoro, its tower and its path.

Further afield: Cupabia, Porto-Pollo, Roccapina

Cupabia

In the north of the gulf, about thirty minutes away, Cupabia is a beach of fine sand and crystal-clear water, popular with windsurfers. Paths waymarked by the Parc naturel régional de Corse (Corsica's regional nature park) start from the beach. The Cupabia dunes and the Porto-Pollo juniper woodland are listed as natural areas of ecological interest: the commune of Serra-di-Ferro calls the juniper woodland a “biological plant monument”.

Porto-Pollo

Just under half an hour away, in the centre of Porto-Pollo, the commune of Serra-di-Ferro organises lifeguard cover in summer with the SNSM (the French sea rescue service). In 2025, two lifeguards were on duty from 1 July to 31 August, from 11am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. Good to know: the commune bans smoking on all its beaches, and drinking alcohol there between 9pm and 6am, from 1 May to 30 September.

Roccapina

35 minutes away to the south, Roccapina is a cove of pale sand and turquoise water, overlooked by a granite rock shaped like a lion. The Conservatoire du littoral protects nearly 780 hectares there, with a Genoese tower dating from 1610. A 45-minute path, freely accessible from the signposted car park on the RT40, leads to the viewpoint. The beach itself has to be earned along a rough track. Camping, fires and motor vehicles are banned.

Tizzano

Half an hour away, via the RT40 then the D48, Tizzano beach also holds the “Una Piaghja per Tutti” label, with an access mat and a bathing wheelchair. Parking and a restaurant on site.

The coves with no road

Between Campomoro and Senetosa, the coast has neither road nor house. The coves of Cala d'Agulia, Cala di Conca or Cala Longa are reached by boat from Propriano harbour, or on foot along the coastal path, as a proper hike. We tell you all about them in a separate article: the coves between Campomoro and Senetosa. If you rent the villa, just ask and we'll prepare a picnic basket for the day.

Before you swim: water quality and the flags

Water quality

Corsica's regional health agency (Agence régionale de santé de Corse) monitors bathing water throughout the season: in 2026, the season began on 15 June. It takes samples at least once a month and publishes the results online at baignades.sante.gouv.fr. At the end of the season, each site is rated excellent, good, sufficient or poor. Before you set off, look up the name of the beach on that site.

The flags

On a lifeguarded beach, the flag flying from the mast tells you whether you can go into the water:

Two red and yellow flags, planted at the water's edge, mark out the supervised zone: swim between them. This code is set by a decree of January 2022.

The infinity pool above the maquis and the Gulf of Valinco

And on days when the sea is rough, there is still the house's infinity pool, heated, filled with salt water and open all year. The Luna Suite is level with the water. The other places in the area, with their driving times from the house, are in our guide to the area.

Frequently asked questions

Baracci, the nearest beach to the house, faces west and offers beautiful sunsets over the gulf. In town, Puraja is known for its own, a few steps from the centre.

Campomoro and Tizzano hold the “Una Piaghja per Tutti” label, with an access mat and a bathing wheelchair. Campomoro also has accessible washrooms. Portigliolo, by contrast, is listed as not accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Some do, in summer. Campomoro and the Lido, in Propriano, have lifeguards in July and August. Porto-Pollo had them from 1 July to 31 August 2025. For Baracci, we have found no official information: ask locally, and always check the flagpole.

On baignades.sante.gouv.fr, the French Ministry of Health website, where Corsica's regional health agency (ARS) publishes its results during the season.
